Abbott is recalling certain Similac-brand powder infant formula products following an internal quality review,
which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in
product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate
health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae,
could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.
If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
Please follow these steps:
- Please check your inventory for 8-ounce powder can samples impacted by this recall. Please place these products on hold and do not provide to your patients.
- Your Abbott Nutrition pediatric sales representative will remove all impacted powder products from your facility within the next four days. If your sales representative does not contact you within four days, please contact him/her directly.
- If you have not been contacted or do not know your sales representative, please call 1-800-545-5216 (for medical professionals) to schedule a pick-up of the affected product samples from your facility.
- If a parent/caregiver contacts you regarding an affected lot, please advise him/her to discontinue use immediately and call 1-800-986-8850 or visit www.similac.com/recall for more information, including product alternatives.
